Return of the Bayeux Tapestry
The 70-meter Bayeux Tapestry is returning to England for the first time since it was created nearly 1,000 years ago. Travelling from France, the tapestry which depicts the historic events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England and culminates in the Battle of Hastings, will be on loan to the British Museum from September 2026 until July 2027.
Likely to have been originally made in England, although who exactly commissioned and paid for it remains disputed, the tapestry is formed of 58 scenes, and embroidered onto linen cloth with coloured woolen yarns. The level of detail is truly exceptional; just imaging how many stitches, the level of coordination, and number of crafts people that were required to complete the tapestry makes it even more of an awe-inspiring artwork.
We are thrilled that we will be able to see it in all its glory in London this year and look forward to feeling inspired with our own tapestry kits - thank goodness they don't take as long!
