The History of Tapestry

Tapestry is one of the oldest forms of art. Tapestries have long been highly prized status symbols adorning the homes of the powerful and wealthy. Indeed, Ancient Egyptian fragments of tapestry have been uncovered, but the western European tradition became firmly established in the 14th Century. At the time, the most highly developed centres of tapestry production were located in Paris and Flanders.

The subject matter of Medieval tapestries ranged from depicting biblical stories, to hunting scenes, landscapes and what is known as Millefleur style which is a background style of many different small flowers and plants.

Tapestry production in Britain

Tapestry production in Britain really took hold after the establishment of the Mortlake Tapestry Works in 1619. Supported heavily by royal patronage, the works based outside of London created a center for tapestry design and training. This tradition, famed for its quality and the ability of its craftsmen to depict natural textures such as skin tone and water, developed into what became known as ‘The Soho Tapestry Makers’, which derived from the original Mortlake workshops.

By the 18th Century, tapestry designs being produced by the Soho Tapestry Makers reflected developing artistic tastes such as chinoiserie, romantic landscape scenes and increasingly realistic portrayals of people.

During the 19th Century, William Morris resurrected the art of tapestry-making in Britain at Merton Abbey Mills alongside hand-knotted carpets, textiles and stained-glass windows which were also produced by Morris & Co. His tapestry designs very much reflected the medieval Gothic style of the age.

Traditional tapestries continue to be made in Britain. The main British workshop is based at Hampton Court Palace, where there is also ongoing research and conservation of tapestries undertaken.
