Men Who Tapestry
Historically, tapestry as a commercial craft was almost solely dominated by men who undertook formal apprenticeships and training, with women creating needlepoint designs at home for their private enjoyment and to adorn their homes.
Today, tapestry is increasingly being enjoyed by men around the world. Known as 'manbroiderers', more men are discovering the delights of cross stitch, with individuals such as MrXStitch championing embroidery. See his TEDx talk here:
Indeed, American football player and Presidential bodyguard Roosevelt "Rosey" Grier released a book titled Rosey Grier's Needlepoint for Men in 1973, in which he sought to disrupt traditional ideas of masculinity and needlepoint; “breaking down those old sex roles,” as he put it.
